EDGEWOOD, Ky. - The Westminster College football team suffered a 34-7 loss at Thomas More Saturday in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action at Dixie Heights High School Stadium in Edgewood, Ky.
The Titans (3-2, 1-1 PAC), entering the game with the seventh-ranked defense in the country giving up just 201 yards per game, surrendered 324 yards against the Saints including 184 passing yards.
Thomas More (3-2, 2-2 PAC) threw the ball early in the game, as freshman quarterback Joey Zerhusen, making his first career start, completed 17 of 25 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns, including six of his first nine throws for 84 yards and a 22-yard touchdown to John Resch on the team's opening drive. Resch led the Saints with six catches for 92 yards.
Westminster failed to convert on its first four third downs and sophomore quarterback Kevin Franz (Finleyville, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) threw an interception on the team's fifth drive at the Thomas More 20-yard line with the Titans trailing 7-0.
Thomas More then scored on the ensuing drive as Zerhusen capped off an 11-play, 67-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run.
Franz finished the game 19-of-27 passing for 116 yards and an interception, while sophomore tailback Nick McKolosky (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) rushed 16 times for 77 yards, all but three yards in the second half.
The Titans scored their lone touchdown when senior reserve quarterback Brett Myers (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) completed a 7-yard pass to freshman fullback Jacob Shaffer (Elmora, Pa./Cambria Heights). Myers completed four of eight passes for 64 yards and a touchdown and an interception.
Thomas More led 17-0 at the half and scored second-half touchdowns when Zerhusen threw to Andrew Carpenter for a 5-yard score in the third quarter and Dwayne Curry ran 16 yards for a touchdown in the fourth. Cordario Collier led the Saints with 76 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Freshman linebacker Adam Falkowski (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) led the Titans with 11 tackles while making his first career start. Junior defensive end Andrew Robison (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) had three of the TItans' five sacks as he finished with 10 tackles.
Westminster hosts No. 9 Washington & Jefferson Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1:30 p.m.
