Westminster Football Suffers 17-3 Loss to Thomas More in 2005 PAC Opener; Titan Gridders Drop to 2-2

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College football program opened its 2005 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule on a down note today at Harold Burry Stadium, as Thomas More scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to break a 3-3 tie and post a 17-3 win over Westminster in front of a capacity Homecoming crowd. The Saints improved to 3-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the PAC, while the Titans fell to 2-2 overall, 0-1 in conference play.

The Titans struggled on offense early, as Westminster was unable to record a first down in the opening quarter. Thomas More has the lone scoring opportunity of the period, but a 37-yard field goal attempt by Brian Sheeley was wide left, leaving the game in a scoreless tie after one period.

Both teams posted drives into enemy territory in the second quarter, but were turned away without points. Thomas More finally broke the scoring drought late in the period. After recovering a Titan fumble at the Westminster 18-yard line, the Saints drove to the Titan 8-yard line where Sheeley connected on a 26-yard field goal to put TMC ahead 3-0 at the half.

Westminster opened the second half with a surprise onside kick, which the Titans recovered at their own 48-yard line. From there, the Blue & White put together a 13-play, 48-yard drive to the Saint 4-yard line,m where sophomore K Jason Lundmark (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg Central H.S.) booted a 21-yard field goal to knot the score at 3-3.

The big play of the game for Thomas More came early in the fourth quarter, when QB Nate Berkley found WR Andy Heinl down the left sideline for a 61-yard touchdown pass, putting the Saints ahead 10-3 with 13:07 to play. Westminster posted a pair of drives into Saint territory late in the game, but a 16-yard sack helped end the first drive and a shotgun snap over the quarterback's head killed the final Titan scoring chance. The Saints closed the scoring with an insurance touchdown on a 47-yard run by freshman Lawrence Colbert with 51 seconds to play.

Thomas More held a 327-150 advantage in total yards over Westminster, while forcing three turnovers and adding a pair of sacks. The Titan offense was paced by senior RB Sean Buggey (Homer City/Homer-Center H.S.), who rushed 28 times for 81 yards in the loss. Sophomore QB Brett Myers (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge H.S.) entered the game in the second quarter and completed 12-of-26 passes for 95 yards, with sophomore WR Brett Ziegler (Somerset/Somerset H.S.) hauling in five balls for 37 yards and junior WR Jake Buzard (West Middlesex/West Middlesex H.S.) adding three catches for 32 yards.

Defensively, senior LB Jerry Bonenberger (Pittsburgh/Mount Lebanon H.S.) paced Westminster with eight tackles (seven solo, one assisted). Senior DE/LB Adam Hadbavny (Westmoreland City/Norwin H.S.) added five solo stops, a forced fumble and a quarterback sack, while junior DE Chris Dulovich (Poland, OH/Poland Seminary H.S.) had a sack and four tackles.

Westminster football is off next Saturday (October 1). The Titans remain at home on Saturday, October 8 when they host defending PAC champion Washington & Jefferson College at Burry Stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m.
