The second half saw Westminster turn a pair of Allegheny turnovers into points. After the Gators lost a fumble at their own 33-yard line on their opening drive of the second half, the Titans moved the ball to the five-yard line where Castillo booted a 22-yard field goal, cutting the lead to 9-6. Allegheny again fumbled the ball away on their next possession, this time at their own 36, which set up a 29-yard Castillo field goal which tied the game 9-9 with 5:07 to play in the third period.
No points were score in the fourth quarter, as Allegheny missed a scoring chance late in the period. The Gators drove to the Titan 26-yard line with 2:49 to play, but a 43-yard field goal attempt was wide right.
The Gators had the first possession in overtime and marched to the Titan 3-yard line, but a 20-yard field goal attempt was wide right. The Titans managed just one yard from scrimmage in overtime, but it did not matter as Castillo (in his first season with the Titan football team after playing soccer at Westminster the past four years) drilled the career-long 43-yarder to end the game.
Westminster won despite being outgained 287-199 by Allegheny, as the Titans were able to turn all three Gator turnovers into field goals. Offensively, senior tailback Sean Buggey (Homer City/Homer-Center H.S.) led the way with 25 carries for 78 yards, while freshman Eddie Williams (Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) added 18 carries for 64 yards. Junior quarterback J.R. Barley (Beaver Falls/Blackhawk H.S.) was 10-of-15 passing for 63 yards, while also rushing eight times for 34 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Brett Ziegler (Somerset/Somerset H.S.) led the receiving corps with four receptions for 39 yards, while classmate Jason Discello (New Kensington/Valley H.S.) also caught four balls for 13 yards.
Defensively for the Titans, senior linebacker Jerry Bonenberger (Pittsburgh/Mount Lebanon H.S.) led the way with a team-high 11 tackles (six solo, five assisted) to go along with a 34-yard interception return. Senior defensive tackle Ryan Chmura (Wampum/Mohawk H.S.) added nine stops, including a team-high 3.5 tackles for losses. Junior defensive lineman Chris Dulovich (Poland, OH/Poland Seminary H.S.) recorded six tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, while senior defensive end Adam Hadbavny (Westmoreland City/Norwin H.S.) also recovered a fumble. Senior defensive lineman Matt Hanhold (Boardman, OH/Cardinal Mooney H.S.) posted a sack for the Titans in the win.
Westminster football returns to action next Saturday, September 17, as the Titans travel to Hiram, Ohio to face Hiram College (0-2) in a non-conference game beginning at 1 p.m.
