FROSTBURG, Md. – The Westminster College women's soccer team fell to Frostburg State University, 2-1, in the first round of the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) DIII Women's Soccer Championship Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Frostburg State improved its overall record to 10-8-2, while the Titans ended their season with a 10-9 record.
The Bobcats got on the board first in the 19
th minute from midfielder Melissa Krofcheck, as she collected a rebound and scored to give Frostburg a 1-0 lead. Frostburg led by the same score at halftime.
In the 71
st minute, Bobcat forward Emily Lehman gathered the ball of a corner kick inside the penalty box and scored, giving Frostburg State a 2-0 lead.
In the 79
th minute, Titan junior and PAC All First-Team player
Keely Birsic (North Ridgeville, OH / Elyria Catholic) scored from 15 yards out to cut the Titan deficit to one. The goal was Birsic's team-leading ninth of the season. Frostburg held on the rest of the way to secure the 2-1 victory.
Frostburg outshot the Titans, 21-11, including 14-4 in the first half. The Bobcats also led in corner kicks, 6-4.
First-years
Jocelyn Gillette (Natrona Heights, PA / Highlands),
Marissa Grande (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard), and
Corrine Larson (Grayslake, IL / Grayslake Central) each totaled one shot and one shot on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Laura Page (Bethel Park, PA / Bethel Park) recorded 12 saves in 90 minutes of work. Page finished with 303 career saves, marking her third all-time in Westminster school history.
